Uses Usually used as template compound in the preparation of molecularly imprinted polymer via electropolymerization and electrodeposition of pyrrole on a pencil graphite electrode,and also used in the preparation of benzimidazolium surfactant, 1-hexadecyl-1H-benzimidazole.

Reactivity Profile An amine. Neutralizes acids to form salts plus water. These acid-base reactions are exothermic. May be incompatible with isocyanates, halogenated organics, peroxides, phenols (acidic), epoxides, anhydrides, and acid halides. Flammable gaseous hydrogen is generated in combination with strong reducing agents, such as hydrides.

 

Benzimidazole is probably combustible.

 

Purification Methods It crystallises from water or aqueous EtOH (charcoal) and is dried at 100o for 12hours.

 

 

Production methods

It is obtained by cyclization of o-phenylenediamine and formic acid. The mixture of o-phenylenediamine and formic acid was heated in a water bath for 2h and cooled. The pH was adjusted to 10 with 10% sodium hydroxide solution. The crude product was slightly boiled with water, decolorized with activated carbon, filtered while hot, and the filtrate was cooled to room temperature, filtered and washed in cold water. The finished product was dried at 100℃. Crude product yield 90%.

 

 

Production methods

The preparation method is to add the crushed o-phenylenediamine into the reaction kettle, then pump the formic acid, keep the reaction temperature at 95 ~ 98℃ and stir for 2h, cool down and crystallize, then neutralize with 10% NaOH to slightly alkaline, cool down and filter, wash with water and dry to get benzimidazole.

 

 

 

Benzimidazole is a chemical whose molecular formula is C7H6N2. Benzimidazole is a flake crystal, m.p.170℃, soluble in water and ethanol. Benzimidazole can be used to prepare fungicide imidazole and imidazole.
